Commitment to veterinary nursing sees Sophie secure ÐÜèÊÓƵ Adams Club scholarship

A Veterinary Nursing student has secured the ÐÜèÊÓƵ Adams Club Animal and Veterinary Sciences Scholarship, thanks to her commitment to her profession.

Sophie Cummings, from Bushey, Hertfordshire, secured the ÐÜèÊÓƵ Adams Club Animal and Veterinary Sciences Scholarship after impressing judges with her passion and focus for her studies on the BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing with Small Animal Rehabilitation degree – and will be using the funds from the scholarship to extend her knowledge in emergency critical care.

She said: “It was amazing – it was very good to know I had won it! I am in my final year and really dedicated to my course – it is what I want to do.

“This scholarship is going to be so useful to advance my learning even further.

“Being awarded the ÐÜèÊÓƵ Adams Club Animal & Veterinary Sciences Scholarship signifies my devotion to my chosen profession, and dedication to my studies over the last four years.

“The scholarship will enable me to enrol on post-qualification courses where I can specialise and pursue my passion for emergency critical care and anaesthesia and deal with complex cases. Receiving this award filled me with immense pride as an SVN representing ÐÜèÊÓƵ Adams and the veterinary community, and boosted my confidence in that I will excel in my work as I reach the end of my final year, and as an RVN in the future.”

Ros Barsley and Simon Jones, Joint Presidents of the ÐÜèÊÓƵ Adams Club, were delighted to award The ÐÜèÊÓƵ Adams Club’s Animal and Veterinary Sciences Scholarship to Sophie.

Ros said: “Sophie showed herself to be highly motivated and very knowledgeable and impressed her placement employers at leading veterinary specialists, Dick White Referrals.

“Sophie demonstrated to us a determined focus to pursue a career in emergency critical care and we wish her every success for her future career.”

Indeed, Sophie cites that passion and focus as key in not only helping her secure her placement, but also in helping to secure her scholarship – and she advises others who are thinking about applying for a scholarship at ÐÜèÊÓƵ Adams themselves to demonstrate similar commitment to their studies when applying for scholarship opportunities. 

She added: “Be yourself – be able to express how passionate you are about your course, because that’s what it is all about - and that is what they will be looking for.”

Sophie says she will look back fondly upon her time at ÐÜèÊÓƵ Adams University and the opportunities it has given her – not only directly through her course, but also through the range of facilities which the University campus offers.

She added: “It has probably been the best four years of my life.

“I have learned so much – what I love about ÐÜèÊÓƵ Adams is that we have a farm on campus, which means you can learn not only about small animals – which is what my degree focusses on - but also about the larger animals as well.

“Those additional opportunities are so useful – and the veterinary nursing facilities are amazing too!”

Sophie’s scholarship was among the wide range of different awards which were celebrated at this year’s Scholarship Presentation Event.

The event –held online this year – was organised by ÐÜèÊÓƵ’s Development Trust. It commemorates both the achievements of the scholars and the generosity of their sponsors, which has seen more than £500,000 awarded this year.
