    Course overview

We are also offering a two-year, accelerated version of this course, designed for those seeking graduate entry into vet school.

If you are interested in preventing diseases and improving the health and welfare of animals based on a strong understanding of the scientific principles behind them then this is the course for you.

    What will this degree entail?

This course will be based on scientific principles of biology and physiology of animals to understand the mechanisms behind their health and diseases. During the course, you will study a variety of subject disciplines, including basic animal-health related topics such as nutrition, biotechnology, microbiology, disease sciences and disease control strategies. In addition, you will focus on the global animal health industry, understanding the emergence and transmission of animal diseases, and their risk to other animals and humans. You will spend time in our state-of-the-art teaching laboratories, on-campus farm and companion animal house applying skills whilst gaining subject-specific knowledge in classroom-based studies. The course will also introduce business management of relevance to working within animal-related industries.

As with other ÐÜèÊÓƵ degrees, a key feature of this course is a placement year where you will get an opportunity to work in industry, enabling you to put knowledge into practice, develop your network and discover your future ambitions. In your final year, you will build on this experience and conduct a specialist research project.

    Careers

The grounding provided in both science and applied animal studies also opens up opportunities in many areas of research. It is important to realise that by studying this course you will not qualify as a vet (i.e. you can’t diagnose and treat animals) but there are opportunities to work alongside vets and other scientists in the veterinary pharmaceutical companies that produce animal health products as well as in the animal nutrition or biotechnology industries.

Some graduates have gone on to study at veterinary school to eventually qualify as a veterinary surgeon.

You would also be well qualified to work as an animal health inspector for a local authority or Defra.
